To her surprise, Lynda Jones was reading the Sunday paper when she learned her newly purchased home was slated to be demolished.

Hoping to stop their house from being bulldozed, Paul and Lynda Jones filed a pro se request for a restraining order against the city of Beaumont on Aug. 20 in Jefferson County District Court.

A TRO has been approved and a hearing has been set for Aug. 29. Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, is presiding over the proceedings.

Court documents show that on Aug. 22, 2007, the city of Beaumont made an inspection of a dwelling at 1179 Evalon Ave., and required some repairs be done to the property.

The city sent a notice with the inspection report to William J. Travis, the former owner of the property, on Oct. 24, 2007. The Joneses did not purchase the property until March 23, 2008, and were unaware the home was in need of repair, the suit says.

"On June 22, 2008, Lynda Jones was reading the Sunday Beaumont Enterprise and recognized that the dwelling at 1179 Evalon was on defendant's June 24, 2008, council agenda for approval to order the structure to be demolished and removed," the suit says.

"With these facts as stated, we would like to be able to do the repairs that are needed, so that we may be able to put and keep a roof over our head. This would also be another devastating loss to us."

The Joneses argue that they will suffer irreparable harm, mental anguish and monetary loss unless the city is enjoined.
