Betty Lou Yawn and Sheila Newell -- the wife and daughter of Ronald Yawn, respectively -- allege Ronald Yawn developed the asbestos-related diseases while working for Texaco in Jefferson County.
During the course of his employment, Ronald Yawn was allegedly exposed to asbestos dust and fibers, which caused him to die "a painful and terrible" death on Oct. 9.
The plaintiffs are suing for exemplary damages.

A Jefferson County man says he lost money after the city of Groves reneged on its authorization of a permit that would have allowed him to build a four-plex apartment building.
Anthony Carlos claims he purchased a lot in Groves, originally intending to construct an apartment building containing six units.
According to the complaint, Carlos claims he was approved to build a four-plex after attending a city meeting in December 2007.
Carlos began to clear land and then went to the building permits department to acquire the permit he needed, but the permit was denied.
He is seeking actual damages, plus court costs.

A lawsuit has been filed in Jefferson County on behalf of a recently deceased mechanic against Garlock Sealing Technologies, claiming the man died after developing an asbestos-related disease.
As trustee of the Majkut Family Living Trust, Donna Weeden filed suit against Garlock alleging Garlock failed to adequately warn Stanley Majkut of the dangers of asbestos exposure.
According to the complaint, Stanley Majkut was engaged in the course of his employment as a machine mechanic and other roles to work with or around asbestos and asbestos-containing products and materials.
The exposure "caused him to suffer from asbestos-related disease and other industrial dust diseases caused by breathing the asbestos-containing products," the complaint states.
The suit alleges Garlock negligently failed to adequately test its products to determine the hazards and continued to distribute the asbestos-containing products after the hazards of asbestos were well-known.
