Woman sues Market Basket for trip in parking lot

Irene Platt had just finished up her shopping at a local Market Basket and was making her way back to her car when she tripped and fell in the parking lot.

Platt, along with her husband Aubrey, filed a suit against M&E Food Mart, doing business as Market Basket No. 43, on May 13 in Jefferson County District Court.

Court documents show that Platt struck her foot against screws and bolts protruding out of the asphalt while traversing the Nederland Market Basket parking lot, causing her to fall and injure herself.
Soon after she tripped, handicapped parking signs were mounted in the area where Platt Tripped.

The suit does not state when the incident occurred.

"Defendant owed plaintiffs a duty to protect and warn plaintiffs of the construction of signage in the parking and foot traffic area," the suit states. "Defendant failed to exercise ordinary care."

The plaintiffs are suing for past and future mental anguish, medical expenses, pain and lost earnings, plus all court costs.

They are represented by attorney Daniel Clayton.

The case has been assigned to Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th Judicial District.
