Local woman sues convenience store after fall

A Jefferson County woman has filed suit against Speedy Stop Stores, alleging she broke her elbow after she fell on a substance while walking through the store.

Stephanie Murphy claims she was shopping for food at Speedy Stop No. 14 in Beaumont on March 25 when she slipped on an unknown substance, causing her multiple injuries.

Because of her fall, Murphy broke her elbow, which required multiple surgeries, lost wages and experienced pain, suffering and mental anguish, according to the complaint filed Oct. 28 in Jefferson County District Court.

Speedy Stop Stores was negligent because it knew of the wet condition, which caused an unreasonable amount of harm to its customers, the complaint states.

Murphy is seeking an unspecified judgment, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, costs and other relief the court deems just.

She will be represented by Gordon D. Friesz of McPherson, Hughes, Bradley, Wimberley, Steele and Chatelain in Port Arthur.

The case has been assigned to Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court.

Jefferson County Circuit Court case number: A185-226.
