Couple files asbestos suit against 49 companies

An Orange couple has filed suit against 49 companies claiming the defendants negligently and maliciously exposed Corbett Duhon to asbestos throughout his career as a refinery worker.

Duhon, along with his wife Barbara, filed the suit March 3 in Orange County District Court.

Some of the defendants in the suit include AMF Incorporated, Viacom, Ford Motor Company and Zurn Industries.

Court papers show that Duhon was allegedly exposed to asbestos products while working in various shipyards, mills and refineries from 1958 to 1979.

The suit does not give specific dates and locations of employment, other than working for DuPont as an insulator for an unknown period in his career.

On Dec. 8, 2009, Duhon was diagnosed with asbestos-related mesothelioma, court papers say.

In their suit, the couple alleges all 49 defendants negligently placed asbestos products into the stream of commerce.

They allege the defendants failed to warn the public of the dangers of asbestos and maliciously exposed workers while concealing medical and scientific data pertaining to the dangers of asbestos.

The plaintiffs are suing for exemplary and punitive damages.

They are represented by Houston attorney Mark Lanier.

Judge Dennis Powell, 163rd Judicial District, is presiding over the case.
