Woman claims medical center treated her with faulty ventilator

GALVESTON - A Galveston County woman has filed a $9 million lawsuit against Mainland Medical Center in Texas City and Republic EMS Ltd. after she reportedly sustained injuries from a malfunctioning portable ventilator.

Margaret Pope says she originally sought treatment for a ticklish feeling in her throat at Mainland Medical Center's emergency room on June 24, 2008, but could not remember anything after being seen.

In a suit filed Aug. 25 in Galveston County District Court, Pope claims her niece told her the ventilator broke down and began to fill her lungs with air. The air then disbursed throughout the plaintiff's body, the suit says.

Substantiated by her nieces' accounts of the day, the plaintiff claims the defendants failed to assist her after the incident in question.

Pope, who is representing herself in the case, insists she consequently lost the use of her hand.

The litigation has been assigned to Galveston County 10th District Court Judge David Garner.
