GALVESTON - W. Perry Evans of Texas City faults Friendship Haven Inc.; Clear Lake Regional Medical Center Inc.; Regent Care Center of League City, Limited Partnership and Cornerstone Health Management Co. for the death of Bertha Reed, recent court documents say.
A lawsuit filed Dec. 7 in Galveston County District Court alleges that the four healthcare entities each contributed to Reed's passing last year from an assortment of illnesses including Alzheimer's disease and bacterial pneumonia.
The decedent, who was a Harris County resident at the time of her death, was a patient under the defendants' care from August 2008 to April 2009.
She suffered from multiple decubitous ulcers, dehydration and the aforementioned bacterial pneumonia "attributed to the defendants' disregard for her physical and emotional well-being and failure to follow standard nursing practices," the original complaint argues.
Plaintiff Evans insists Reed did nothing to bring about the reported injuries. She died on April 26, 2009.
Consequently, Reed's estate seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.
Attorney Patrick B. Larkin of Pearland is representing the plaintiff, and Galveston County 405th District Court Judge Wayne Mallia is presiding over the case.
