Plaintiff non-suits furniture store over employee's collision

A settlement was recently reached between Winnie resident Craig Stowe and Van Deventer Furniture Rentals, a Beaumont company.

In June 2008, Stowe filed suit against the furniture company, alleging one of its truck drivers, Edgar Garcia, backed into his vehicle.

Court records show that on June 28, 2006, Stowe was parked on the 3500 block of Blanchette in Beaumont when Garcia, who was also named as a defendant in the suit, struck him from behind while driving a Van Deventer truck.

On Dec. 10, 2009, Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, signed an agreed take-nothing judgment, ruling that the parties had reached a compromise.

However, the case was never officially disposed, court records show.

A summary judgment hearing, requested by Stowe, was slated to be held on Jan. 3 but was cancelled because the parties finished hammering the out the details of the settlement, a court official told the Southeast Texas Record.

Stowe was seeking damages for his alleged mental anguish, lost earnings and medical expenses.

He is represented by Houston attorney Jeff Crawford.

Van Deventer is represented by attorney Collen Shellenberger.
