Jefferson County files 5 tax suits against Brent Coon

Coon

Five new property tax lawsuits seeking money owed by Beaumont attorney Brent Coon have been filed in Jefferson County District Court.

Seeking delinquent property taxes, Jefferson County on Sept. 19 filed two suits against Coon personally and three more against his company, Brentwood Investments.

The five lawsuits filed by the county seek a total of $122,537 from the Beaumont lawyer, court papers say.

The first lawsuit, Jefferson County vs. Brent Wayne Coon et al, also names Janet Coon, Community Bank of Texas, Provost Umphrey Law Firm, Premium Plumbing and Stratos Legal Services as defendants, and seeks $10,700 for a property at St. Louis Court, Suite 101.

The next three lawsuits name Brentwood Investments as the defendant and seek a total of $103,265 for various properties throughout Jefferson County.

The final lawsuit, Jefferson County vs. Brent W. Coon, seeks $8,570 for a property located at 215 Orleans Street in Beaumont.

All of the suits allege the taxes were authorized by law and legally imposed in the county in which the suits were brought.

The five new lawsuits are not the first seeking money from Coon.

As previously reported, American Express sued Brent Coon & Associates on Dec. 27, alleging Coon's firm neglected to pay its corporate credit card balance, racking up $170,818 in charges on a past due account.

The county is represented by Clayton Mayfield, attorney for the Beaumont law firm Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson.
