Couple, company sued by Jefferson County over delinquent taxes

Jefferson County has filed suit against the two residents and one corporation that it claims failed to pay more than $8,000 worth of taxes since 2009.

Valeri Varnado Chelette, Vanessa Varnado Fisher and R&D Marble have failed to pay property taxes on a piece of Jefferson County property they jointly own. The defendants owe $8,885.91 for the delinquent taxes, which have not been paid since 2009, according to the complaint filed March 12 in Jefferson County District Court.

Because of the defendants' failure to pay their taxes, Jefferson County has filed a lien against the property, the suit states.

In its complaint, the county is asking the court to foreclose on its lien and to award it the taxes owed, interest, costs, attorney's fees and other relief the court deems just.

Clayton E. Mayfield of Linebarger, Goggan, Blair and Sampson in Beaumont will be representing them.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.

Case No. B192-150
