Suit brought over death of 60-year-old disabled patient

A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against St. Giles Living Centers, alleging a lack of care caused the death of a 60-year-old mentally disabled patient.

Brenda Pence, Lance King, Jammie King and Krissi Savoy filed the suit on behalf of Dennis King on April 5 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the defendant's website, St. Giles serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Southeast Texas, including Lufkin, Beaumont, Baytown, Richmond/Rosenberg, Houston and the surrounding areas. The company headquarters are in Lufkin.

The suit states that Dennis was a resident at St. Giles. On Dec. 11, 2010, he was transported to a hospital and found to be anemic. The suit says it was determined that Dennis suffered anoxic brain damage. He died the following day at the age of 60.

The plaintiffs allege the defendants failed to inform them that Dennis was ill, ignored his worsening condition and negligently failed to seek timely medical attention.

The plaintiffs allege the defendant acted with malice, which they claim entitles them to exemplary damages.

Attorney Hart Green of the Beaumont law firm Weller, Green, Toups & Terrell represents the plaintiffs.

Judge Bob Wortham, 58th District Court, is assigned to the case.
