Former mail carrier says he was fired because of his age

HOUSTON - A former mail carrier claims he lost his job because of his age, according to a lawsuit filed recently in federal court.

Plaintiff Larry Callies claims the U.S. Postal Service fired him and replaced him with a younger individual, according to the suit filed Dec. 21 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas.

Callies worked for the post office in Sugar Land for about 34 years prior to his termination, the suit states.

He claims the USPS treated him differently from other employees because he was "associated with a union" and "exercised certain rights guaranteed under the First Amendment."

Callies adds he had filed several grievances within the last four years of his employment.

According to the original petition, the USPS retaliated against Callies through suspensions under more than one superior.

Callies also alleges the USPS knew that he was in poor health, but did not provide him reasonable accommodations.

"All of the actions the various responsible officials took against the plaintiff were calculated to terminate the plaintiff," the suit says.

"Although the conduct of the defendant's supervisors and responsible officers maybe explained as neutral, they serve to discriminate against the plaintiff and are a pretext for discriminatory and retaliatory conduct."

Consequently, the complainant seeks unspecified monetary damages.

He is representing himself.
