Port Arthur driver blamed for causing rear-end collision

Two Jefferson County residents have filed suit against the driver who they claim caused a collision after he rear-ended them at a traffic light.

Lawanda Shelvin and Dareale Shelvin claim they were stopped behind another vehicle at a red light governing the intersection of the eastbound lanes in the 3600 block of State Highway 87 on March 17, 2011. Suddenly, defendant McCalvin Jones Jr., who was driving in the same direction, struck the back of the Shelvins’ vehicle, pushing them into the automobile in front of them, according to the complaint filed March 14 in Jefferson County District Court.

Because of the collision, the Shelvins suffered personal injuries that required medical treatment and experienced physical pain and mental anguish, the suit states.

They blame Jones for causing the collision, saying he negligently drove too fast, failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to timely apply his brakes, failed to keep his vehicle under proper control and failed to drive in a safe manner.

The Shelvins are seeking a judgment within the jurisdictional limits of Jefferson County District Court, plus pre- and post-judgment interest, costs and other relief the court deems just.

They will be represented by Allen Parker of The Parker Law Firm in Port Arthur.

The case has been assigned to Judge Gary Sanderson, 60th District Court.
