A motion for continuance has been granted in litigation brought by the widow of Jasper Snyder Sr., who sued Union Oil of California and Chevron USA, alleging the defendants exposed her late husband to toxic benzene.
As previously reported, Martha Snyder filed the suit May 23, 2011, in Jefferson County District Court.
Court records show that on April 8 the defendants filed a motion for continuance, asserting that more time was needed for discovery before trial.
The case was originally set on the court’s May try or dismiss docket.
Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, granted the motion on April 17, moving the case to the court’s June 2013 trial docket.
The suit alleges Snyder worked at Union Oil’s Jefferson County premises. During his employment he was exposed to benzene.
“As a result of such exposure, Jasper Snyder Sr. developed chronic lymphocytic leukemia, from which he died a painful and terrible death on Nov. 12, 2010,” the suit states.
The suit alleges the defendants new for decades the benzene could cause cancer but still allowed their employees to work with benzene products.
The plaintiff is suing for all wrongful death damages allowable under law.
Beaumont attorney Keith Hyde of Provost Umphrey represents the plaintiff.
The defendants are represented by Michael Baker, attorney for the Beaumont law firm Strong Pipkin Bissell & Ledyard.
