Woman falls while exiting elevator, sues Christus

Linda Belyeu and her husband Jimmy are suing Christus Health Southeast Texas and Otis Elevator Co. for injuries Linda received when she fell while exiting an elevator.

The suit was filed June 13 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, on Aug. 2, 2012, Linda, a Christus nurse at the time, was at the St. Elizabeth Hospital parking garage. She got into an Otis elevator and descended to the first floor.

“She stepped out of the elevator and fell heavily to the ground, severely injuring her left knee,” the suit states. “When she looked back, she saw that the elevator had stopped with its floor located five inches above level of the parking garage floor.”

She has been unable to return to work since, the suit states.

The suit accuses Otis of failing to maintain the elevator and Christus of negligently failing to provide a safe place to work.

The plaintiff is suing for her alleged past and future medical expenses, mental anguish, pain, impairment and lost wages.

Beaumont attorney Steven Barkley represents the plaintiffs.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, is assigned to the case.
