Beaumont woman files lawsuit to save home damaged by Hurricane Katrina

A woman is in fear of losing her Beaumont home after she claims the city has condemned it, despite her alleged efforts to repair the damages caused to it during Hurricane Katrina.

Ruby G. McKinnon filed a lawsuit Aug. 9 in Jefferson County District Court against the city of Beaumont.

In her complaint, McKinnon alleges her home at 2320 Brickyard Drive in Beaumont sustained damages during Hurricane Katrina. In an attempt to repair the house, McKinnon signed up with a work program that aims to repair or replace the home and render it to an acceptable and habitable condition, according to the complaint.

However, the city of Beaumont has since condemned the home and plans to demolish it, the suit states.

“If the defendant demolished the home…, the plaintiff would be rendered homeless, lose most of her belongings including irreplaceable heirlooms and lose all of the equity in the house,” the complaint says.

In her complaint, McKinnon seeks a restraining order preventing the city from destroying her residence, plus expenses and other relief the court deems just.

Korinthia M. Miller of Missouri City will be representing her.

Judge Milton Shuffield, 136th District Court, has been assigned to the case.
