Local bar association to host legal clinic for veterans

The Jefferson County Bar Association will host a free legal advice clinic for area veterans.

Volunteer attorneys will be available to provide legal advice from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 1, at the V.F.W. Hall Post #2775 in Orange.

Veterans can receive legal advice on family law, probate, consumer rights, landlord and tenant law, tax law, bankruptcy, employment, foreclosures, disability claims and veteran’s benefits.

The clinic is open to any Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Liberty or Chambers County veteran or spouse of a deceased veteran free of charge.

For veterans who need legal representation and who financially qualify may be assigned a pro bono attorney. According to a press release, the guidelines have been adjusted for veterans so that they may have income up to 200 percent above the poverty level and still qualify for services.

Appointments are encouraged by calling the bar office at (409)835-8647, but walk-ins will be welcome.
