Young Lawyers to host seminar for parents of special needs kids

The Jefferson County Young Lawyers Association will host a legal workshop for parents of autistic and special needs children. 

The workshop will be held 6-8 p.m., Thursday, April 24, at The Shorkey Center, 855 S. Eighth Street. This workshop is open to the public and free babysitting services will be provided. 

The event is being sponsored by a grant from the Jefferson County Bar Association Foundation.  Local parents, educators and attorneys are welcome to attend free of charge.

The workshop will feature Galveston attorney Dorene Philpot and Beaumont attorney Harvey Warren.

Philpot represents children with special needs and their parents in Texas as well as Indiana.She will present the basic principles of special education law, including a discussion of the basic rights afforded to all special needs children and how to properly advocate for those rights.

Warren represents numerous parents with special needs children in estate planning matters.  He will present the basic principles of guardianship and estate issues that are specific to parents with special needs children.

Both speakers will speak for about 45 minutes to an hour on their topic and also be available for questions and answer.

The seminar will inform parents, educators and others with information to ensure that their children are receiving a “free and appropriate” education in the public schools. 

Also, the workshop will help parents of special needs children make appropriate estate planning decisions.
