A Harris County woman is suing the Department of Veterans Affairs, claiming sexual harassment and discrimination.

Luretta Garner filed a lawsuit April 8 in the Houston Division of the Southern District of Texas against Eric K. Shinseki and the Department of Veterans Affairs, citing harassment.

Garner claims she worked as a housekeeping aide for the VA. The suit alleges she was a victim of sexual assault, which was affirmed by the board of the Veteran Administration in a hearing on Feb. 28, 2013.

According to the brief, after the hearing Garner was uncomfortable at work and she was ultimately prohibited from working, she believes, as a result of her race and religion.

Garner is seeking damages of $300,000, interest, attorney's fees and court costs.

She is being represented by Houston attorney Ronald H. Tonkin.
