The next attorney general of Texas recently announced the first member of his team.
On Nov. 18, state Sen. Ken Paxton sent out a press release naming his pick for first assistant attorney general, Chip Roy, who served as chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz the past two years.
“Chip (Roy) is a longtime friend, and someone whose counsel I trust,” said Paxton. “He has served Texas in the U.S. Senate, in the governor’s office, and as a federal prosecutor. I am pleased that he will bring his strong legal mind, devotion to liberty, and servant’s heart to the Office of Attorney General as first assistant.”
In addition to Cruz, Roy’s résumé boasts service to two more high-profile Texas politicians, Gov. Rick Perry and Sen. John Cornyn.
“I have been blessed to serve as Chief of Staff to Senator Cruz the past two years as he has honored his promise to Texans and ‘made DC listen,’” said Roy.
“Moving on from his team is like leaving family, but you never truly leave. I was fortunate to learn how to be a lawyer under former Attorney General and now U.S. Sen. John Cornyn. Now, Attorney General-elect Paxton has given me the honor of being home in Texas and helping him lead the great people of the Office of Attorney General as we defend the interests of this great state.”
In spite of some controversy surrounding the candidate, Paxton walloped his Democratic opponent, attorney Sam Houston, in the general election.
On May 2, the Texas State Securities Board issued a disciplinary order against the attorney from McKinney, finding Paxton solicited investment clients without being registered with the state – a required act under the act.
Paxton has also announced his transition advisory team who will advise him as he assembles his staff and outlines his vision for the office.
In addition, Paxton launched a transition website, www.paxtontransition.com, for those interested in learning more or applying for positions.
