JC car wreck trial ends with defense verdict

BEAUMONT - A Jefferson County jury has found no negligence on the part of a defendant named in an automobile collision suit.

Seeking more than $50,000 in damages, plaintiff Judy Smith filed suit against Felipe Gonzalez on Jan. 6, 2014 in Jefferson County District Court.

The case was called up for trial on March 28 and ended two days later.

According to the lawsuit, on Feb. 16, 2012, Smith was a passenger in a vehicle traveling on Gulfdrive. The vehicle was passing through a light when Gonzalez allegedly struck it on the driver’s side.

Smith alleged Gonzalez negligently failed to keep a proper lookout and avoid the collision.

However, at trial jurors found no negligence on the part of Gonzalez, finding that his negligence did not cause the collision, according to the charge of the court, filed March 30.

Smith was asking jurors to award her damages for her mental anguish, impairment and medical expenses.

The suit was filed through attorney Kelley Smith of the Lanier Law Firm in Houston.
