Van Zandt Co. brings suit over allegedly defective jail locks

Van Zandt County recently brought a deceptive practices lawsuit against a Minooka, Ill.-based business specializing in high security detention equipment, hardware and controls after discovering flaws in its jail locks.

A lawsuit filed May 27 in the Tyler Division of the Eastern District of Texas alleges that Midwest Portland, LLC designed the Model #1200 jail locks which the plaintiff purchased for its justice center, stating that “inmates at the jail were able to use county issued combs and bed sheets to compromise these locks and open their cells” in June 2014.

“As a result of the locks designed by Defendant, Van Zandt County incurred a number of expenses resulting from having to house the inmates in other correctional facilities during the time,” the suit says.

“Van Zandt County had to replace the locks at the Van Zandt County Justice Center.”

Consequently, the county seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

It is represented by attorney Robert S. Davis of the law firm Flowers Davis, P.L.L.C. in Dallas.
