BEAUMONT – The city of Beaumont has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit alleging it failed to warn a woman who was killed near a work area after falling in a hole nearly two years ago.

Representing the estate of Wanda Mae Joubert Guillory, Wanda Mae Jones-Joubert filed the suit Oct. 19 in Jefferson County District Court, seeking up to $2 million in damages.

According to the lawsuit, on Nov. 9, 2015, the city and its employees were engaged in making repairs to underground utilities near the 2300 block of McFaddin Avenue.

The work required excavation of the roadway and the creation of a “large and dangerous hole,” which Guillory fell into and was killed, the suit states.

The plaintiff alleges the condition posed an unreasonable risk of harm and that the city failed to adequately warn Guillory.

The plaintiff, who is the mother of Guillory, is suing for her mental anguish and loss of inheritance, plus pecuniary loss and funeral expenses.

Houston attorney Michael Howard represents the plaintiff.

Judge Donald Floyd, 172nd District Court, has been assigned to the case.
