HOUSTON – The Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County has been implicated in a lawsuit that alleges the public transportation agency terminated a cancer-stricken employee.

William Cody sued METRO on Jan. 22 in the Harris County 165th District Court, stating the defendant’s reasons for firing him were false.

Cody was diagnosed with a Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor in 2013. According to recent court documents, the plaintiff was able to perform his job duties despite undergoing medical treatment.

METRO reportedly fired Cody in 2016 for poor performance, to which the suit asserts was a front for discriminating against him because of his illness.

Consequently, the complainant seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

He is represented by Mark G. Lazarz and Brian J. Levy of the law firm Shellist Lazarz Slobin LLP in Houston.
