TYLER – The surviving family of a Texas Department of Criminal Justice inmate who reportedly died about a week before his scheduled release has filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit.

Court documents filed on Mar. 5 in the Tyler Division of the Eastern District of Texas deem CoreCivic, Inc. responsible for the late August 2016 passing of Alfredo D. McCowan at Bradshaw State Jail in Rusk County.

CoreCivic, formerly known as Correction Corp. of America, operates Bradshaw.

According to the original petition, McCowan’s death at the age of 43 was connected to the use of synthetic marijuana. His survivors fault the defendant for failing to keep the illegal drug out of the premises.

Consequently, his estate seeks unspecified monetary damages.

They are represented by William Todd Hughey of The Hughey Law Firm P.L.L.C. in Marshall.
