HOUSTON – A Houston consumer alleges a debt collector contacted him regarding an alleged debt that does not belong to him.

Juan Lopez filed a complaint on July 9 in the Harris County District Court against The CBE Group Inc. alleging that the Iowa corporation violated Chapter 392 of the Texas Finance Code and the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices - Consumer Protection Act.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that on April 8, the defendant's affiliate called him regarding an alleged debt that does not belong to him. He alleges he informed the defendant that the debt was not his but the defendant's agent kept demanding a payment. He alleges he requested written verification of the debt but the defendant refused to provide any information in writing.

The plaintiff holds The CBE Group Inc. responsible because despite his explanation that the debt was not his and that the defendant was contacting the wrong person, the defendant's agents continued to call him and demanded payment from him.

The plaintiff seeks all damages and all legal fees, with interest, attorney's fees, costs and such other and further relief to which he is entitled. He is represented by S. Colin Mabrito of The Mabrito Law Firm PC in Houston.
