HOUSTON – A legal malpractice lawsuit has been filed against Jonathan L. Chatmon and his firm, L. Chatmon & Associates, per recent Harris County District Court records.

Mayda Mejia asserts in the suit filed on Sept. 4 in the Harris County 164th District Court that the defendants mishandled her litigation arising from a motor vehicle accident.

Chatmon purportedly “did very little on the file for almost (two) years then settled the case shortly before the running of the statute of limitations for less than policy limits.”

“The defendants settled the case without the plaintiff’s knowledge, approval, or permission,” the original petition says.

Court papers further accuse the respondents of forging Mejia’s signature on settlement documents and a settlement check, insinuating that they pocketed the damages for themselves.

Consequently, the complainant seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

She is represented by Ross A. Sears, II of the law firm Sears & Crawford, LLP in Houston.
