BEAUMONT – At age 30, Cody Dishon has accomplished a lot. He is a partner at The Ferguson Law Firm and was recognized statewide as a Rising Star as a litigator. He made his mark in 2018 for his work in helping achieve multiple million-dollar results.
Last week, Dishon added another distinction – he became one of the youngest in Texas history to become board certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, according to a press release.
Only 1 percent of the attorneys licensed to practice law in the State of Texas hold Board Certification in Personal Injury Trial Law.
The State Bar of Texas states: “Board Certification is a mark of excellence and a distinguishing accomplishment. Within the Texas legal community, Board Certification means an attorney has substantial, relevant experience in a select field of law as well as demonstrated, and tested, special competence in that area of law.”
Dishon said, “I was more than happy when I got the news. Becoming board certified in personal injury trial work is hard. The State of Texas evaluates your professional conduct and ethics. You submit multiple references including at least 1 judge whom you have appeared before. You are required to have gone to trial as lead counsel in at least 10 cases. Then, you take a very, very hard written examination. It is draining.”
On the day he learned of his certification, Dishon was mediating and resolving yet another substantial case for his clients. It was a case that took on special meaning for him, the release state.
“My clients were injured and had gone to another law firm,” Dishon said. “They sat on the case for a year and then kicked the clients to the curb, telling them their case had no value. No value? We looked at the case, went to work and found a path forward. I cannot discuss how much the case settled for – that’s confidential, but let’s just say the clients are extremely happy with the outcome.
“And do I get special satisfaction that we made a substantial recovery after those other folks couldn’t do it? Sure. And then I get back and find out about the board certification. That was a good day.”
Dishon is the fourth Ferguson Law Firm partner to attain board certification in Personal Injury Trial Law, joining Paul ‘Chip’ Ferguson, Jane S. Leger and Mark Sparks.
Managing partner Chip Ferguson commented, “Cody’s board certification is the result of hard work, drive and ambition. He sat out to accomplish that goal and did it. He is one of the youngest attorneys in the State of Texas to become board-certified. His work had already shown he was an attorney of the highest caliber and this just confirms it. We couldn’t be prouder.”
