HOUSTON – A Kingwood woman claims that a hospital recliner bed injured her almost two years ago has filed a state district lawsuit against the facility and the piece of furniture’s manufacturer.

Recent Harris County District Court records show that Cora San Miguel brought the suit against Encompass Rehabilitation Hospital of Cypress, LLC and Sauder Manufacturing, Co. in the 190th District Court on Mar. 25.

At the time of the Apr. 4, 2017 incident, San Miguel was preparing for an overnight stay with her sister at Encompass, which reportedly provided the plaintiff the Versant Sleep Recliner made by Sauder to sleep on.

San Miguel recalls making the bed and attempting to sit on it when it “suddenly and unexpectedly collapsed.”

“The catastrophic collapse of the recliner caused her to fall and forcefully strike her head against the window ledge in the room,” the 12-page original petition says.

According to the complaint, San Miguel suffered injuries to her head, neck, and back, as well as an increase in her blood pressure and sugar count. She was transported to the North Cypress Medical Center.

The complainant seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

She is represented by the law firm DeHoyos & Connolly, PLLC in Houston.
