Man pins fall from ladder on small business owner who hired him to diagnose malfunctioning AC unit

Lawsuits

HOUSTON – Mohammed Amar, Sr., of Harris County, is suing a local small business owner for “severe, debilitating” head injuries he allegedly sustained almost two years ago while diagnosing a malfunctioning air conditioning unit on the roof of the defendant’s business.

According to recent Harris County District Court records, Amar filed a lawsuit against Kareem Jamal, doing business as IFix Gadgets, on Mar. 26 in the 165th District Court.

The 9-page complaint explains that the plaintiff gained access to the roof by using an extension ladder provided by the respondent, who purportedly left during the course of the work.

Amar’s unsuccessful attempts to contact Jamal to assist him with his descent down the ladder prompted the complainant to leave the roof on his own, the original petition says.

Amar recalls the ladder sliding to the left and causing him “to fall on the concrete surface.” He reportedly continued trying to contact the defendant on the phone as he lied “in agonizing pain.”

The plaintiff’s spouse eventually went to the scene of the incident and took him to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Court papers further state that Amar sustained “an acute wedge compression fracture of his L3, a fracture of his left tibial plateau, and a fracture of his left pateallar.” After undergoing two surgeries, the complainant then underwent “grueling” physical therapy sessions to help regain some mobility, the suit says.

He seeks unspecified monetary damages and a jury trial.

Clifford D. Peel, II of The Peel Law Firm in Houston is representing Amar.
