JC auto collision suit settles for $300K before trial

Car accident 30

BEAUMONT – For more than three years, an automobile collision lawsuit lingered at the Jefferson County courthouse before a settlement was reached before a trial could get underway.

Alleging gross negligence, Steven Tubbs, Jamie Smith and Betty Cheek filed suit against Sagar and Ajeshkumar Patel.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiffs were in an automobile collision on April 11, 2015 on Folsom in Beaumont. Tubbs and Smith were struck by an SUV being driven by Sagar, who fled the scene and claims he was being stalked.

Sagar notified his father, Ajeshkumar, who allegedly joined in the conspiracy to deprive law enforcement, the suit states.

The case was slated to go to trial on June 3 but settled beforehand, according to a courthouse official.

A court document shows a $300,000 settlement was reached.

The plaintiffs are represented by Beaumont attorney Gilbert T. Adams III.

The defendants are represented by Beaumont attorney Richard Hatfield.

Judge Baylor Wortham, 136th District Court, presided over the case.

Case No. D-198082
