Couple alleges Pasadena medical team's negligence caused husband's brain injury

HOUSTON — A Harris County couple is suing a Pasadena medical team alleging the husband suffered a brain injury during a procedure.

Michael Smith and Valerie Smith filed a complaint July 11 in the Harris County District Court against Dr. Jerry M. Keepers, Dr. Eric Kay Fung Chan, Dr. Peter Chong and Vista Community Medical Center LLP, doing business as Surgery Specialty Hospitals of America, alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 8 ,2017, Michael Smith suffered a severe anoxic brain injury while he was undergoing facet nerve blocks for lumbar spine pain at Surgery Specialty Hospital. The suit states that the defendants were negligent through failing to properly monitor anesthesia care, failing to perform pre-operative tests and failure to stabilize the plaintiff, among a number of other failures.

The Smith seek monetary relief of more than $1 million, actual and exemplary damages, interest, court costs and all other just relief. They are represented by attorneys Joseph K. Jones and Sean Koch of Sloan Firm in Houston.
