HOUSTON — A patient is suing a group of medical providers, alleging he was not given the level of care he needed, leading to health complications.

Joshua Sykes filed a complaint Aug. 14 in Harris County District Court against CHG Hospital Houston LLC, doing business as Cornerstone Specialty Hospitals Clear Lake, also known as Cornerstone Hospital of Houston — Clearlake CHG Cornerstone Hospital of Houston LP and Spanish Meadows of Katy Ltd., doing business as Spanish Meadows Nursing & Rehabilitation alleging medical negligence, corporate negligence and liability.

According to the complaint, Sykes was admitted to the Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston on Aug. 13, 2017, with nausea and other symptoms and was diagnosed with meningitis. The plaintiff said he eventually was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome and lost most of his motor functions. The plaintiff became unable to move in his bed and said he had to have a feeding tube placed.

The suit alleges Sykes was transferred to a rehab hospital in September 2017. The plainitff allegedly required much assistance with day-to-day functions due to his condition but did not suffer from skin breakdown at the time he was admitted to Cornerstone. The defendants, however, allegedly was negligent in their care of Sykes who was caused to suffer pressure ulcers.

The plaintiff said he was transferred to Spanish Meadows on Oct. 25, 2017, but had to be transferred to a hospital due to worsening symptoms and eventually developed an infection of the bone, causing him to seek antibiotic treatments. The defendants, the suit states, had an obligation to provide the plaintiff with the care he needed but were negligent in doing so.

Sykes seeks trial by jury, court costs, interest, statutory damages and all other just relief. He is represented by attorneys Patrick W. Powers and Breana M. Rosenbaum of Powers Taylor LLP in Dallas.
