Former employee accuses U.S. Veteran Affairs Department of disability discrimination

HOUSTON — A former employee is suing the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, alleging she was discriminated against due to her disability.

Stephanie McAfee filed a complaint Sept. 9 in the Harris County District Court against the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Maria Lewis Wilson, Kendra Price Mays, Christopher Sandles and Carolyn Baldwin alleging disability discrimination, retaliation, failure to provide accommodation and violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

According to the complaint McAfee, was considered an exemplary employee at the VA Medical Center in Houston although she was disabled. Despite her excellent performance ratings since starting to work for the VA in 1998, the suit states, McAfee was given pushback regarding her need to take time off as well as medical leave requests and overtime requests, plus requests for accommodations due to her disability. The suit states she also was denied promotion opporutnities.

The plaintiff said she was threatened by the defendant, given poor performance ratings and denied promotions without cause. McAfee alleges she filed charges of disability discrimination in 2015 and 2016

McAfee seeks between $200,000 and $1 million, attorney fees, court costs, interest and all just relief. She is represented by attorney Andre D. Evans of Andre Evans & Associates PLLC in Houston.
