BEAUMONT – Awarded a daughter and her father $12,000 in damages following the trial of an automobile collision lawsuit.

Seeking up to $1 million in damages, McKenzie Andrus and her father, Malcolm Andrus, filed suit against Urlene Matthews on Feb. 27, 2018 in Jefferson County District Court.

According to the second amended petition, on May 11, 2016, McKenzie was operating her father’s Ford Mustang and traveling eastbound in the inside lane of Johnson Boulevard in Port Arthur when Matthews, who was driving a Lincoln Town Car, turned left in front of McKenzie, causing the collision.

The suit accuses Matthews of negligently attempting to turn left without yielding the right of way.

The case was called up for trial in late September. Following the trial, jurors were asked what sum of money would compensate McKenzie, according to the charge of the court, filed on Nov. 1.

The jury awarded her $10,000 for her past mental anguish and $2,000 for her past medical expenses. No damages her awarded for her alleged future mental anguish or her past and future impairment.

Attorney Larry Hunter of The Ferguson Law Firm represents the plaintiffs.

Judge Baylor Wortham, 136th District Court, presided over the case.

Case No. D-201370
