HOUSTON (February 25, 2020) – Hogan Thompson LLP, a commercial trial boutique, recently opened its doors in downtown Houston. Founded by two former Reynolds Frizzell LLP attorneys, the firm exclusively handles commercial litigation for its clients, with a focus on representing energy companies operating in the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford Shale and other oil and gas producing areas.
Hogan Thompson’s energy clients include prominent Fortune 500 companies like Chevron, EOG, Marathon Oil and BP, along with other significant oil and gas companies such as Callon Petroleum and Escondido Resources. The firm also represents other companies in commercial litigation, such as major real estate firm Moody National Companies. Currently, Hogan Thompson has matters pending in state and federal court, along with arbitration proceedings. The firm is representing clients in several prominent oil and gas disputes, including a lease pooling dispute currently in the Texas Supreme Court, several lease-termination cases in the Permian Basin, and more than a half-dozen royalty disputes in the Eagle Ford Shale.
“We were lucky to work with an amazing set of lawyers at our previous firm and learn a lot of great lessons during our time there,” said founding partner Christopher Hogan. “Starting our own firm gives us the ability to focus our attention and effort on energy litigation and the flexibility to offer our clients competitive and alternative fees that are better suited to their needs.”
While the firm is starting with two attorneys, it plans on adding more attorneys in the near future. “We plan on being one of the country’s go-to firms for energy litigation,” said founding partner Samantha Thompson.
“Looking at the legal marketplace, litigation boutiques offer their clients a lot of advantages when compared to larger, full-service firms,” said Hogan. “We can staff cases leanly and work them efficiently to keep costs down, and we focus all of our attention on litigation rather than dividing our attention between numerous practice groups.”
Hogan and Thompson have impressive credentials. Both graduated from top-ranked law schools and served as law clerks for federal appellate court judges after graduation. “Not only are we driven and hard-working, but Chris and I bring a lot of intellectual firepower to bear in our cases,” said Thompson.
Christopher Hogan has served as first-chair counsel in state and federal court trials, receiving favorable jury verdicts in each of these venues. He has also served as first-chair counsel in numerous arbitration final hearings, including in a successful arbitration for millions of dollars on behalf of a Fortune 500 oil and gas company. Hogan is licensed to practice in Texas, New Mexico and Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Pattern Jury Charge – Oil and Gas Committee for the Texas Bar Association and an Officer serving on the Institute for Energy Law - Litigation and Dispute Resolution Practice Committee. Thompson Reuters listed Hogan in its Up-And-Coming 100 and has named him a “Texas Rising Star” every year since 2013. Additionally, Benchmark Litigation has named him to its “40 & Under Hotlist” every year since 2017. Before opening Hogan Thompson, Hogan was a partner at Reynolds Frizzell and before that an attorney at Susman Godfrey LLP. Hogan received his law degree from Columbia University Law School in 2008 after which he clerked for the Honorable Jerry E. Smith of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Samantha Thompson has represented corporate and individual clients in state and federal court across a wide variety of complex business disputes, including energy, construction, employment and real estate matters. Thompson views each case as a chapter in the intricate story of her clients’ businesses and is energized by helping clients reach a favorable resolution. Thompson received her undergraduate degree from Rice University in 2011. After graduating cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2016, she spent two years clerking for the Honorable Claire V. Eagan of the Northern District of Oklahoma and the Honorable Robert E. Bacharach of the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. She most recently was a trial attorney at Reynolds Frizzell.
Hogan Thompson’s offices are located in downtown Houston at 801 Travis Street, Suite 1330, Houston, Texas 77002.
