HOUSTON — A Texas man who suffered multiple injuries while working aboard a drill ship is claiming the negligence of the ship's operators and owners.

Norbert Kasey Kurtz filed a complaint May 22 in Harris County District Court against Rowan Services LLC and Rowan Companies Inc., alleging general maritime negligence and other claims.

Kurtz was assigned to the Rowan Resolute and was working as the vessel's chief mechanic. Kurtz alleges in his complaint that while working aboard the vessel, he suffered injuries on two separate occasions. Kurtz claims that on July 19, 2019, while trying to traverse a "watertight door," he tripped and fell, injuring his knee, which required surgery.

Kurtz alleges the door was not properly marked and did not have the required "nonskid" safety equipment. Kurtz also claims that in March of 2019, while "engaged in several heavy physical lifts," he suffered injury to his back because Rowan "did not have the proper safety procedures or safety equipment."

Kurtz alleges Rowan breached its duties to provide a safe work environment for its crew. He claims the basic treatment for his "severe bodily injuries" he suffered has been delayed due to Rowan's failure and delay in paying.

Kurtz seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million, trial by jury, interest and all other jut relief. He is represented by Anthony Buzbee and Christopher Leavitt of The Buzbee Law Firm in Houston.
