HOUSTON – Evan Holyfield, a 22-year old boxer “with enormous talent and promise,” is suing his manager, alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress and seeking a rescission of contract.

Evan, the son of four-time heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, filed the suit against Maurice “Termite” Watkins and his company, Boxing with Termite, on June 17 in Harris County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, Evan, who is currently ranked as the No. 706 boxer in the world, is continuing his family’s boxing legacy.

From late 2018 to early 2019, Watkins pitched Evan on the idea that he could manage his career, wining and dining him and luring him with notions of grandeur, the suit states.

Following a “relentless pressure campaign,” Evan “capitulated” and signed with Watkins.

“Soon after signing the contract, (Evan) Holyfield discovered that Watkins’ representations were fraudulent,” the suit states. “Holyfield receives nowhere near the training and attention that Watkins promised or that is necessary to become a world champion.”

Evan is also alleging intentional infliction of emotional distress because of the way Watkins treated him and his family members.

“At various times, Watkins – an older white man – banned Holyfield from even using the gym because Holyfield – a young black man – would not ‘submit’ to his demands,” the suit states. “When Holyfield questioned the quality of training provided, Watkins threatened to sell Holyfield to the ‘highest bidder’ as if he were property.

“When Holyfield’s family members questioned the use of such racially based language, Watkins responded ‘what do you know, you have never been a slave.’”

Evan is alleging breach of contract and is suing for actual and exemplary damages, plus attorney’s fees and court costs.

Houston attorney Andrew Cobos represents him.
