HOUSTON — A Houston dentist is being accused of performing unnecessary treatments and causing permanent damage to a patient's natural teeth.

Joan Hartland filed a complaint March 18 in Harris County District Court against Susan Ellison, D.D.S., Susan Ellison, D.D.S., PC and Susan Ellison and Associates PC alleging dental malpractice.

According to her complaint, Hartland became a patient of Ellison in January of 2018, and sought treatment for a chipped front tooth. She alleges that Ellison recommended that she use Invisalign for the alignment of her teeth and to prevent further chipping of her teeth.

She also alleges Ellison "seemed to be pushing the idea of veneers" and eventually persuaded her to do veneers for her front teeth, even though Hartland claimed she was happy with the results of her Invisalign treatment. Hartland also claims Ellison changed the number of veneers to 12 and then changed the plan of care from veneers to crowns which resulted in the grinding down of her natural teeth.

She alleges Ellison did "so much damage to her natural teeth" that the crowns would not fit properly and ended up paying her $18,300. Hartland further alleges she required $29,602 in reconstruction on her teeth and has suffered an imbalanced bite.

Hartland seeks monetary relief between $100,000 and $200,000, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Ronald Lovett of The Lovett Law Firm in Katy.
