HOUSTON — A worker is claiming the negligence of Helix Well Ops after being struck in the face and head by a loose cable while aboard one of their vessels.

Michael Kovacs filed a complaint March 26 in Harris County District Court against Helix Well Ops Inc., alleging negligence.

According to his complaint, Kovacs was employed by Vysus Group and working aboard the Helix Energy Q5000 "semi-submersible vessel." He claims that on Dec. 3, 2020, he suffered "severe and debilitating" injuries when a MUX cable tied to a handrail with a rope, failed and struck him in the face and head, knocked off his hard hat and safety glassed and knocked him to the ground.

Kovacs alleges as a result of his injuries, he suffers from "frequent" headaches and dizziness and suffered injuries to his head, neck and other parts of his body. He claims Helix Well Ops failed to inspect and maintain its equipment and failed to train its employees and provide a safe work environment.

Kovacs further claims the defendants failed to provide him with "appropriate" medical attention after the accident and failed to properly secure the cable to the handrail.

Kovacs seeks monetary relief, interest and all other just relief. He is represented by Kurt Arnold, Caj Boatright, Joseph McGowin, Roland Christensen and Claire Traver of Arnold & Itkin LLP in Houston.
