HOUSTON – For decades, George Foreman and his wife paid “exorbitant insurance premiums” only to find out their classic car collection wasn’t covered after a fire broke out in their garage.

On April 9, the famous boxer filed a breach of contract suit against Nationwide Property & Casualty Insurance in Harris County District Court.

According to the lawsuit, in the early 2000s the Foremans moved into their current residence. They contacted their Nationwide agent and “explicitly” sought to protect their classic car collection, which is valued at $5 million.

The Foremans claim that they were assured their cars were covered so long as the vehicles were in the garage. On April 14, 2019, a fire broke out in the garage and damaged around 51 cars and three motorcycles.

On May 23, 2019, Nationwide stated that the car collection was excluded from coverage and denied the Foremans’ claim, the suit states.

The Foremans seek more than $1 million in damages.

Houston attorney George Murphy of Vinson & Elkins represents them.
