HOUSTON — A man claims he was a victim of an unprovoked attack by a security guard while walking through the parking lot of a Houston business after being dragged to the ground and handcuffed.

James Edwards filed a complaint June 17 in Harris County District Court against Baron Murphy, Congregational Security Inc., East Crosstimbers Plaza LP, Done Deal Wireless Communications LLC doing business as Boost Mobile, Ifix Gadgets LLC, Cash America Pawn LP and Rent-A-Center Texas LP alleging negligence and other claims.

According to his complaint, Edwards was walking through the parking lot of the premises owned by the defendants on June 21, 2019. He alleges that Murphy, who was employed as security guard for Congregational Security, "approached him, and in an unprovoked attack" dragged him to the ground and handcuffed him.

Edwards claims as a result of Murphy's actions, he suffered severe injuries including to his knee, lumbar spine, swelling and abrasions. He further claims Murphy "intentionally, knowingly and recklessly" attacked him and that Congregational Security was negligent in hiring and failing to train Murphy.

Edwards also alleges the defendant business owners negligently allowed an untrained security guard on their premises and failed to warn or make their premises reasonably safe.

Edwards seeks monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest and all other just relief. He is represented by Anna McMullen and Veroncia Villarrel of The Amaro Law Firm in Houston.
