HOUSTON — A family alleges their loved-one died from severe blood loss which was left untreated by medical staff at St. Luke's Sugar Land Hospital.

Bruce Thompson, Karen Thompson and Robin Thompson filed a complaint Aug. 30 in Harris County District Court against St. Luke's Community Development Corporation doing business as Sugar Land Hospital, Houston Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists, Yassir Sonbol, M.D., and others alleging vicarious liability.

According to the plaintiff's complaint, the plaintiffs' decedent, Stephanie Leach Thompson, had a history of atrial fibrillation, COPD and gastrointestinal bleeding and sought treatment at St. Luke's Sugar Land Hospital on Dec. 23, 2019, due to shortness of breath.

The plaintiffs allege that Stephanie Thompson was treated with anticoagulants and an electrocardioversion. They claim Thompson began to experience abdominal pain and "all the risk factors" of a "spontaneous retroperitoneal bleed" with no one examining her abdomen and was given anti-inflammatory pain medication which worsened her gastrointestinal bleeding.

The plaintiffs claim the defendants failed to treat Thompson's life-threatening blood loss which caused her to suffer a fatal cardiac arrest due to inadequate blood volume.

The plaintiffs seek monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest and all other just relief. They are represented by Tim Riley of The Riley Law Firm in Houston.
