HOUSTON — A man alleges his physician negligently ignored his allergy to Sulfa which caused permanent damage to his body.

Wilbert Carmouchie filed a complaint Oct. 26 in Harris County District Court against Robert J. Cornell, M.D., and Robert J. Cornell, M.D., P.A., alleging medical negligence.

According to the complaint, Carmouchie underwent a urologic procedure performed by Cornell on Aug. 13, 2019, at St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston. He claims that Cornell ignored the signs of his post surgery complications due to a severe allergy to sulfa and that Cornell negligently prescribed him a sulfa-based medication while continuing to ignore his allergy which then caused him to suffer burns all over his body and including around his genitalia and on the inside of his mouth.

He alleges that his allergic reaction was so severe, that he had to be taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital to be treated by a team of specialists who diagnosed him with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and has suffered devastating effects including his teeth breaking off due to burns on his gum and loss of bladder control that requires external bags for the remainder of his life.

Carmouchie seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. He is represented by M. Obaid Shariff of The Shariff Law Firm in Houston.
