HOUSTON — Two Harris County men who were injured in an explosion while working at a chemical plant in Louisiana are claiming negligence.

Tyler Terry and Mario Fuentes filed a complaint Nov. 8 in Harris County District Court against Westlake Chemical Corporation, Westlake Chemical Energy LLC and Westlake Chemical OPCP LP alleging negligence and premises liability.

According to their complaint, the plaintiffs were working at the Westlake Chemical Petro Complex in Sulphur, Louisiana on Sept. 27, 2021, which was undergoing a "maintenance turnaround."

They allege that while working at the site, "the Petro 2 ethane cracker exploded" and caused them to suffer injuries, lost wages and incur medical treatment expenses. They allege the defendants' negligence for failing to properly supervise the site, provide adequate training or inspect and maintain its equipment.

They also claim the defendants failed to warn of the dangerous condition, properly oversee safety in the work area as well as violated OSHA regulations and standards.

The plaintiffs seek monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest and all other just relief. They are represented by Benny Agosto, Jr., Lena Laurenzo and Barney Dill of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz & Stronger in Houston.
