HOUSTON — A woman alleges HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood physicians and staff failed to properly diagnose her spinal cord injury.

Yolanda Adams filed a compliant Dec. 9 in Harris County District Court against KPH- Consolidation Inc., doing business as HCA Houston Healthcare Kingwood, Eric Lopez, M.D., Daniel Bonville, D.O., and Rianna Coelho, M.D., alleging negligence.

According to her complaint, Adams, who was 44 years old at the time, slipped and fell "face-first" on her driveway during an icy winter storm on Feb. 16, 2021. She claims she suffered a laceration above her eye and that when EMS arrived, her extremities were cold and that she could not feel or touch below the knees.

Adams claims that after arrival at HCA Kingwood, she was put in a warming blanket that caused burns on her skin, was overly medicated with pain medication and that the hospital was on "internal disaster" with no operating room or heat throughout the hospital. She further claims that on Feb. 20, 2021, she was taken by EMS to Adams Memorial Herman Northeast Hospital and then transferred to HCA Kingwood and diagnosed with a spinal cord decompression.

Adams claims the delay in diagnosis and treatment of her spinal cord injury by the defendants has caused her to suffer permanent "neurologic deficits."

Adams seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Robert Painter and Taunya Painter of The Painter Law Firm PLLC in Houston.
