HOUSTON — A Martin Preferred Foods worker alleges she was exposed to hazardous ammonia while working on a machine at the company's plant in Houston.

Celia Sandoval filed a complaint June 13 in Harris County District Court against Martin Preferred Foods LP alleging negligence.

Sandoval, according to her complaint, was working for Martin Preferred Foods on Silver Street in Houston on Sept. 24, 2020. She alleges that her supervisor told her to work on a new machine which had been previously overfilled with "hazardous ammonia" and was leaking gas and fumes. Sandoval claims that she suffered injuries as a result of being exposed to and inhaling the ammonia.

She alleges Martin Preferred Foods' negligence for failing to have a safe work environment, failing to have adequate equipment or have adequate training. She further alleges Martin Preferred Foods failed to warn of the risks and dangers or implement safety precautions to protect her from the risk of inhalation.

Sandoval claims Martin Preferred Foods was also negligent for failing to investigate and report concerns regarding unsafe equipment at the plant and did not comply with codes and regulations. She also claims she suffered disfigurement, scarring, impairment and incurred medical expenses as a result of the defendant's negligence.

Sandoval seeks monetary relief, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Muhammad Aziz and Karl Long of Abraham, Watkins, Nichols, Agosto, Aziz and Stonger in Houston and Jose Orihuela of Orihuela & Associates PLLC in Houston.
