HOUSTON — A contractor injured in a wellhead explosion at Oxy Energy's job site in Reeves County is claiming negligence.
Maria Lourdes Avitia filed a complaint July 21 in Harris County District Court against Oxy Energy Services LLC alleging negligence.
Avitia, according to her suit, was working for Omma Trucking who was contracted to position equipment at Oxy Energy's premises in Reeves County on June 5, 2021. She claims she was not advised that other operations were underway on the day she was at the defendant's location or the risks involved in the operations. She claims that while positioning the equipment, a slip line connected to the wellhead at the location exploded and that the force of the explosion threw her back into the side of her truck.
Avitia alleges she suffered injuries to her neck, back, head and vision. She claims Oxy Energy's negligence for failing to perform the wellsite operations in a safe manner, failing to enforce polices and procedures and for failing to properly train and supervise its employees and contractors. Avitia also claims Oxy Energy did not provide a safe workplace or properly inspect and maintain its equipment.
She alleges that she also suffered impairment, disfigurement, mental anguish, lost wages and incurred medical expenses as a result of her injuries.
Avitia seeks monetary relief of $250,000 or less, interest, trial by jury and all other just relief. She is represented by Michael Brennan of Daspit Law in Houston.
