Woman claims rental property was infested with bed bugs

GALVESTON — A woman alleges she suffered injuries after renting a property in Galveston that was infested with bed bugs.  

Carlene Beasley filed a complaint Aug. 3 in Galveston County District Court against Loretta Cole, Vacasa LLC and Turnkey Vacation Rentals Inc., alleging negligence, violation of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act and breach of contract.

Beasley, according to her suit, rented a property on Avenue T in Galveston through the defendants on Sept. 6, 2020. She claims that during her stay, she developed painful and irritated lesions on her body due to the property being infested with bed bugs. Beasley alleges the defendants negligence for renting a property that was not in a reasonably safe condition, failing to inspect and properly clean the property before renting and for failing to notify and warn her of the bed bug activity on the property. 

She also alleges the defendants violated the Deceptive Trade Practices Act and breached their contract by renting a property that was infested with bed bugs. Beasely claims as a result of her injuries, she suffered lost wages, impairment, disfigurement and incurred medical treatment expenses. 

Beasley seeks monetary relief between $250,000 and $1 million, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Daniel Rice of The Rice Law Firm in The Woodlands.
