GALVESTON — A Discount Groceries store customer alleges an oversized mat the front door caused her to trip and suffer injuries.

Beverly Richard filed a complaint  Aug. 16 in Galveston County District Court against Silver Traders Investments Inc., individually and doing business as Discount Groceries and Mudasir Lakhani alleging negligence and liability.

Richard, according to her complaint, was at the defendant's store on Texas Avenue in LaMarque on May 14, 2021. She claims that she tripped and fell over a mat that was "oversized and improperly placed" at the front door of the store. Richard alleges as a result of the fall, she suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon that required multiple surgeries.

She also alleges the defendant's negligence for creating the dangerous condition, failing to warn of the hazard and for failing to properly maintain and inspect its premises. Richard claims the defendants were also negligent for placing the obstruction that impeded safe walking at the front of the store and that they failed to properly supervise and train their employees.

She further claims the defendants knew or should have known of the unreasonably dangerous condition posed by the improperly sized and place mat placed on the floor.

Richard seeks monetary relief of more than $1 million, interest and all other just relief. She is represented by Carlos Hughes, Jr., of The Hughes Law Firm in Houston.
